If you've ever bought a new home and immediately noticed exactly where the previous homeowners had placed their rugs, then you're aware of just how bad the floors can be faded by the sun. You then have to get new hardwood floors or have them professionally restored. Both of those options are time consuming and expensive! After you get some nice new hardwood floors installed in your home, you may start wondering how to prevent that sun damage so your floors will look just as good as the day you bought them!
While keeping anything looking brand new forever is a tall order, there are a few things you can do to keep them in great shape for decades! Regularly sweeping, vacuuming, and using hardwood floor cleaner is a good way to keep them looking new! One thing you may not have thought of is where most of this damage comes from. In this article I'll be describing one of the BEST ways to prevent fading in your home. You could keep your blinds and shades closed all the time leaving you feeling trapped, or you can have crystal clear window film professionally installed on your windows!
One benefit that's often overlooked in the window tinting world, is the fading protection you get from window film. Most films on the market today block 99% of UV Rays, which is due to their polyester construction. UV Rays are responsible for around 40% of fading on hardwood floors, furniture, and rugs. The other factors are visible light, which is responsible for 25% of fading, heat is also responsible for 25% of fading, and the other 10% is cause by physical damage, water, children, etc. Window tint can block up to 100% of the visible light. Manufactures rate the shade of film based on how much light is allowed to passthrough the film and the glass. This is known as Visible Light Transmission, or "VLT" for short. A film that has a VLT of 100% will let absolutely no light in, which is known as a black out, or white out film depending on the color of the material. On the other extreme, the lightest films on the market are security films, which are used to prevent break-ins and have a VLT of around 90%.
Most home owners that are seeking window films as a means of fading protection, will typically choose a quality ceramic film. Ceramic films are great because they can have a Total Solar Energy Rejection (TSER) of up to 74% and have a VLT of up to 90%. The most common film installed from Better View Tinting for fading protection is, Xpel Clear View Plus 70%. This is almost a completely clear film, that has a VLT of 72%, TSER of 55%, and rejects 94% of IR Heat. The only reason to go darker would be for glare reduction, heat rejection, or privacy.
